Gideon Gomo

Gideon Gomo lives and works in Harare, Zimbabwe, where he has practised for over twenty years. His practice is centred around conveying the events and situations of daily life in Harare. His sculptures and assemblages reveal the hidden and ignored voices of society and are infused with ritual, fantasy, and dreamlike qualities.

Gomo predominantly uses stone—in a reference to Springstone carving, a cornerstone of traditional art in Zimbabwe—bringing it into conversation with contemporary modes of making. He manipulates the stone, twisting and turning the material, later incorporating metals, copper sheets, wood, and found objects to create large-scale sculptural interventions that explore colour, form, and narrative.

Recent solo exhibitions include Nhungo at Village Unhu, Harare; Nhanga Nyaya, Dzimwe nzendo dzinotanga wasvika, National Gallery of Zimbabwe; and Dachau, Kleine Altstadtgalerie, Munich. In 2022 he participated in the G.A.S. Foundation residency in Lagos, Nigeria, and in 2023 he undertook a residency at Gasworks, London, researching printmaking as an accompaniment to his sculptural practice.
